American Baby - Gabrielle Glaser

Sub-title: A Mother, A Child, and the Shadow History of Adoption

I read this book in one day, it was riveting, to say the least.  Framed by the story of one birth mother forced to give up her son at birth, it tells of the thousands of females in the 1950s, 60s and 70s who were shuttled off in shame to homes where they gave birth to their illegitimate children and were forced to give them up for adoption into a system riddled with greed, dishonesty and self-righteous patter.  For me it explained why there are so many people testing their DNA to find their birth parents or child.

Quotes

"...music of which their parents disapproved: Elvis Presley, Chubby Checker...--music that Alan Freed, the DJ...had introduced as "rock 'n' roll" - African American slang for sex----"

"Viola Bernard, a Columbia University psychiatrist...and Peter Neubauer, a New York University psychiatrist who was a protege of Anna Freud's...study of nature over nurture...caused separation of twins and triplets at birth.  The records for the Bernard/Neubauer study are sealed until 2065..."

"By adding birth and adoptive parents, plus siblings, half siblings, and eight grandparents, she said, adoptee-rights advocates estimated that approximately a third of American had a link to adoption in their direct immediate families."
